Year 3

Nen and the Lonely Fisherman

In English recently, Kahlo class have been reading ‘Nen and the Lonely Fisherman’ by Ian Eagleton. This is a magical tale about a merman who can live on both land and in the underwater kingdom but he is not satisfied with his life and longs for something more. As we continue to read this story, we will continue to grow our Writing skills and will then plan and write our own fantasy story.

Leon and The Place Between - Grahame Baker-Smith

Over the last few weeks in English, Da Vinci have been reading the fiction book Leon and The Place Between written by Grahame Baker-Smith. We have worked a lot on description writing and the children have continued to develop skills and techniques that can help their narrative writing to become more interesting for the reader. Some of these include: using noun phrases to set a mood and describe, using possessive apostrophes for both singular and plural nouns and using a range conjunctions to link ideas.

Counting on Katherine by Helaine Becker

In this writing project, the children investigated the life of the inspirational Katherine Johnson and developed the skills needed to create a non-chronological report about her impact on the Space Race.

The Lost Property Office by Roger McGough

In this poetry project, the children used published list poems to investigate how to create poetic structures such as syllable patterns, repeated phrases and expanded noun phrases to create their own poem as well as a collaborative performance piece.

Greek Mythology by Jean Menzies

In this writing project, the children are investigating the structures and techniques used to create engaging and exciting mythological stories. Across the project, the children will develop skills such as applying possessive and plural apostrophes alongside subordinating clauses to create their own piece of Greek Mythology to add to Odysseus’s Voyage.
