Materials - Brilliant Builders!
In Spring 1, we began our materials topic. We started the topic by identifying the difference between a material and an object, we then began to look at the properties of different materials. We went on a hunt around our classrooms, picked objects, worked out the materials and described their properties. We found out that we had lots of objects made out of plastic! We found out that a plastic bottle is hard, stiff, dull and not stretchy. We also conducted some investigations whilst looking at the properties of materials, Discovery Dog helped us find out what objects float and sink as well as what objects are transparent, translucent and opaque. We finished off our project by looking at different types of houses and identifying the materials they were made out of, their properties and why they are suitable. We have had so much fun!
Seasonal Changes
As part of our Science learning we have been looking at the weather in the 4 seasons. We have particularly focused on the weather in Winter and looked outside for different signs of winter. We found out that in Winter we can sometimes have snow, it is a lot colder and most plants and trees lose their leaves. As well as this, we have also been looking at the number of daylight hours. We found out that in Winter the number of daylight hours drops this means that it can be dark when we go to school and dark when we come home! We compared this to the other seasons and found out that Summer has the highest number of daylight hours. We also looked at different ways of measuring weather, we found out that we can find out the temperature by using a thermometer and we can use a rain gauge to find out how much rainfall there has been. We created our very own rain gauges and observed them over the weeks to see how much rainfall there was
Amazing Me!
As part of our Science project, Amazing Me! We have been exploring our bodies, we began our project by looking at a human body and labelling the body parts. We then looked at our 5 senses identifying which sense links to different body parts. We also looked at the human life cycle looking at how we have changed. We enjoyed looking at our own baby photos identifying how we’re similar and different. We also looked at how we look after our body. We found out that we need food, water and air to survive. We concluded our learning by exploring how to keep our bodies healthy. We created posters at the end of our project to showcase our learning!
Materials
We have been looking at the suitability of materials. We investigated which material would soak up a puddle of water. The children made a prediction as to which material they thought would soak up the puddle. Once we have completed the investigation the children concluded their findings.
We have been looking at uses for stretchy materials. We have talked about what If some of our everyday items were stretchy, would they be fit for purpose. We then tested the stretchiness of different materials.
We used different substances to try to free the animals from the ice. The children predicted which substance would melt the ice the quickest. We then observed over time to see which melted the quickest.
Crazy Soap
We have been observing the changes of the crazy foam soap over the day.
Investigate Materials
As part of our materials learning, we looked at different objects and identified what materials they were made from including wood, plastic, glass, metal and rock. We looked at the objects that were made from this specific materials and described the simple physical properties of them. We then compared objects and grouped them together on their properties. We completed an investigation looking at different types of objects finding out whether they were transparent, translucent or opaque.
Investigating Sound and Hearing
We found out that sounds travel via vibrations. We used paper cups and string to see if the vibrations passed through the string to our ears. We talked about different types of sounds and how we can classify them as quiet sounds and loud sounds. We conducted a investigation asking the question 'Are sounds the same everywhere?' we observed different places around school including forest school, the corridor and playground. We found out that some sounds were the same however they varied.
Light
We learned that light is everywhere. We looked for different sources of light round school on our light hunt, we found out that the sun, bulbs and the alarm where all different sources of lights. We conducted our own investigation thinking about where the darkest place was in school. We found out that the darkest place was the P.E cupboard as there was no lights or windows to allow light to pass through from the sun. We also looked at different types of light: electrical and non-electrical.
Humans and Animals
we learnt all about humans and animals. We classified animals into different types of animals including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish.
We also looked at the human body labelling the basic parts - thinking about which sense is associated with each body part. We found out that all animals need 4 things, food, water, air and shelter in order to live. We thought about how we could enhance our lives by eating healthy and created our own healthy plate.
Evolution
In this project, we also looked at inheritance and how we inherit features from our parents. We talked about different ways we look like our own family members.
